Reports to: Director, Foundation Relations

Location: Any city with a J Street office - DC, Boston, NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, LA (temporarily remote due to Covid) 

Start Date: Immediately


J Street is seeking a gifted writer, natural storyteller and skilled editor to fill the open position of Senior Associate, Foundation Relations. The ideal candidate will have a passionate commitment to the written word and experience crafting narrative in a professional setting.

The Senior Associate will join a high-performing and collaborative National Development Team charged with raising $10 to $15 million annually in support of J Street’s mission and activities. The ideal candidate will be comfortable spending the majority of their time writing and editing fundraising narrative geared towards a diverse base of supporters including both individual donors and institutional funders across the board -- national, regional, personal and family foundations. 

This position will work in partnership with the Director of Foundation Relations in envisioning and crafting proposals, reports, concept papers; in generally fulfilling the narrative requirements of J Street’s funding partners; and in both growing and strengthening the work of the Foundation Relations Department.

Primary position responsibilities

  • Together with the Director of Foundation Relations, facilitate, prepare, review and edit grant proposals, applications and reports and supporting supplemental materials.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Foundation Relations to envision and create narrative in support of current and prospective funding opportunities.
  • Serve as primary writer and producer for select proposal and report packages, and as needed.
  • Build relationships with staff and departments across the organization to develop a deep understanding of J Street’s work.
  • Support the Director of Foundation Relations in ongoing foundation prospecting efforts.
  • Creative collaboration and brainstorming within and beyond the fundraising team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Three or more years in a professional setting
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with talent at translating complex, detailed policy work into clear and compelling language suitable for funder audiences
  • Comfort with both concise (1 to 2-page) and long-form (5 to 10-page) writing projects
  • Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy – commitment to work product that is thorough, complete, grammatically impeccable and polished
  • Ability to handle multiple competing deadlines
  • Generosity, flexibility and kindness to nurture a highly collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of foundations and associated proposal and reporting processes
  • Experience in proposal development
  • Comfort with using foundation/grant submission technology platforms and portals, as well as Salesforce CRM
  • Comfort with the Google suite of products
  • Excellent administrative skills
  • Interest in foreign policy with a particular focus on the Middle East


The salary range for this full-time exempt position is $54,500 - $60,000 depending on experience. J Street recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in J Street’s bargaining unit and is covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
